To the extent that backups aren't continuous, you risk losing your most recent work. You probably don't want all of your backups to be real-time or near-real-time. Manually rotating local backups offsite is a royal pain and I've never known of anyone doing it on a daily basis, which is the closest thing to a continuous Cloud backup. And an advantage of HFS+ is that there are many utilities that are still able to work with it, repair damaged drive file systems, and recover lost files. Platter based drives don't work as well with APFS. One last thought: format your external drives to HFS+ (Mac OS extended with journaling enabled). If you had had one, you would not have had the disasters you wrote about above. These are considerably faster than SATA-based SSDs.īut no matter what you choose, GET A BACKUP GOING. You might also consider using an "nvme" blade SSD in a USB3.1 gen2 enclosure. Too high a failure rate.įor platter-based storage, I'd consider Toshiba or HGST (Hitachi).īuy bare drives and USB3 enclosures - assembly is little more than "snap together".Īgain, the SATA 2.5" form factor works with standard USB3 enclosures. I wouldn't keep buying WD external drives. SuperDuper actually runs forever in "free mode" (you can do a complete clone but you have to register to do incremental clones).

Two are better (with one stored "off-site"). Whatever - backup is highly advisable, as you discovered. Keep one HDD offsite and connect the other when needed. Buy them with about twice the capacity of your SSD. Maybe switch to Seagate (although statistically there is no difference). I recommend backing up external storage with two similar HDDs using FreeFileSync. Sandisk makes similar models that might be better, but are not red. How large is your photo collection?įor external storage with a 256GB Macbook, I bought a 1TB Samsung T7 SSD because it is cute and red. Suggestions please re options, what has worked well for you, brand names if allowed and any other useful comments. I do not want to have the same problems again. Obviously I need to rethink photo storage, back ups and a safe way of doing this. Yesterday the WD drive f(about 2 years old) failed as I was downloading some images, and I think there were about 17 hundred images on that one. Stupidly I did not have another back up, so I paid a data recovery company to try and recover them the first time - it cost a heap of money and they were unable to recover everything. Twice I have had them fail, losing several hundred pics each time.
PHOTO STORAGE FOR MAC PRO
I use a Macbook Pro with very little internal storage so I have been using a WD external drive to store photos, which are accessible via LR.
